Ugh. Just ugh.
Let’s break it down. Daley, who has been playing really well the last few games (yes he didn’t have any goals, but it’s not like he wasn’t productive), was traded for Rob Scuderi, who (trying to be positive) isn’t the worst player on the Penguins roster. Except he kind of was.
Daley is 32. Scuderi is 36. Daley had more goals last season than Scuderi has had in a 12 year career.
The most worrying thing to me is that we’re likely to have a pair of 36 year olds as our bottom pairing for the playoffs. And we thought Keith last year was an iron man.
Now, the positives. Scuderi has 32 blocked shots this season. Daley has nowhere near that level. Scuderi will probably fit better into the defense-first mindset of Q and the role he assigns d-men, and he’ll provide an able body to put next to Roszival (or Rundblad, but he’ll stop playing at this level and go back to being the 7). It also means we might get a chance to develop our skilled defensive prospects.
That’s right, we may finally see Pokka get a few games just to test out where he’s at, and we might get Goose back. God what a great potential call for Foley: Moose to Goose to Moose who scores!
I could see myself liking this move eventually, especially if we save money through it, but with how high I was on Daley recently and with how low all of Pittsburgh’s media seems to be on Scuderi…
I want to be wrong.
