Sidney Crosby is feeling like Kanye after getting two back-to-back wins in this series. He got his team to the Finals, and now they’re winning. He’s in the locker room screaming “I am a God” still.
So what’s gone wrong for the Sharks, who entered this series looking like the best team in hockey? Well, this time the defense can’t take 100% of the blame.
And they lost in overtime in an extremely tight game. (cough. cough. #Itoldyouso)
The offense for the Sharks is sputtering. The Joe Show is not currently on ice. Thornton and Marleau were nowhere to be seen this game, and it appears that finally making the Finals is messing with their heads a bit. It’s hard to be in the League this long and now to finally be seeing success, it may be hard.
The defense was the sole provider of the Sharks points, with Justin Braun scoring one before having to leave the team. That must have felt great, and I’m sure that goal went out to his late father-in-law.
But the defense was also to blame for the first goal, where Roman Polak lay on the ice instead of being an active combatant. Brendan Dillon was taken off that puck though, and so shares in some of the blame.
The OT goal, off the faceoff, there’s not much more the Sharks could do. After making some key stops and being saved a few times by his posts, Martin Jones was just unable to come up with that puck, and there was some traffic in front of him as well.
The Penguins’ Matt Murray also came up with some huge saves and for the large part won this game for the Pens. Their defense remains suspect, but when Murray is playing like he is, and standing on his head game in game out, it doesn’t really matter.
Their offense is also clicking, as the crucial line of Hagelin-BONINOBONINOBONINOBONINOBONINOBONINOBONINO – Kessel continues to roll, out playing anything the Sharks throw at them.
The Pens are rolling, and they don’t appear to be stopping. The Sharks have been excellent at home thus far in the series, and two games won in their own house could be a turning point in this series, but if the Pens continue to keep it close and Murray continues to be his “I Am A God” Self, I don’t think there’s much the Sharks can do.
They need their offense. They need their first two lines to step up. Where is Joe Pavelski? Joe Thornton? Logan Couture? Joel Ward was unable to hit the net? Really? There’s a lot going wrong for the Sharks. It’s time to fix it.
Even after two games down, however, this remains anybody’s series. The Sharks could easily come back with firepower and win this thing. Joel Ward was a few inches off from scoring a few goals this game. He just continued to miss the net.
x-factors: neither had a huge impact in this game. Neither was to blame for a goal, but neither contributed to scoring one either. Malkin and Martin will continue to be significant members of these two teams, however.
Our prediction: You don’t win in 6 without losing two? Honestly, I’m probably wrong, however if the Sharks win four straight I’d love to be proven wrong/right.
