In Darkest Night or: Chumbawumba … Western Conference Final Game 4

I call this game Chumbawumba, because when the Blues fall down, they get back up again, and the only thing that can keep them down is the Sharks getting their defensive act together. And also because, does anybody really want the Blues around anymore? They’re very close to Chumbawumba.

I’m done with the Blues. But they keep coming back because they’re a talented team, and they would kind of have to be to get this far. They won this game because they realized momentum needed to swing, and so put in a new goalie, something the Penguins did in their Game 4, and almost pulled the game back because of.

Jake Allen was able to truly shut out the Sharks until the third period, and the Blues were able to focus on offense, something they’ve lacked in this series, because of it. This was the Blues playing their best hockey and it seems like the Sharks weren’t ready for it more than anything. The Blues were able to take advantage of chances created because the Sharks defense was out of place and unawares. Their own defense did not have the same problems, and again it allowed the offense to FINALLY capitalize.

The Blues offense has been nowhere the last three games and if this is the coming out party the Sharks are in deep water, usually where they thrive but we could see the same demons come for the Sharks that we’ve seen in the past – they could choke away a series they could have locked up after four games. The Sharks didn’t ease off the throat, instead the Blues were able to sweep the leg by playing a more offensive sided game, which the Sharks weren’t ready for. For any Game of Thrones fans, they pulled an Oberyn.

The Sharks weren’t their best selves, unlike the Blues. We saw the Sharks best selves the last two games, and maybe they were tired, maybe they weren’t ready for a true offensive attack from the Blues, because that’s not the game they have been playing, but the Sharks were caught off guard and were killed in this game because of it.

The defense was entirely out of place,  and four of these goals could have been prevented by better defense that the Sharks have proven to be capable of. They lost this game, make no mistake, far more than the Blues won it. They will play a better game, and be ready for the offense of the Blues. The offense got more shots on Allen this game than they did on Elliott last game, but they don’t have him as figured out, and with this team it’s simply a matter of a period now.
